Virginia Waterman's Memorial on the Eastern Shore
About us

The Friends of Virginia Waterman’s Memorial on the Eastern Shore is a group of folks dedicated to erect a memorial in honor of those loved ones who perished at sea and to give comfort to those left behind. The idea for this memorial is the result of the kindness and love of Rita Hutton. Rita lost her son to the sea in 1992. His name is engraved in a memorial located in Cape May, NJ, so therefore it will not be on this memorial. She started this project for others. To have a place to go and pray, reflect, and perhaps meet others who share a common bond brings Rita much comfort and solace. With an unselfish attitude Rita has dedicated all her energies, at age 71, to bring this sense of comfort to the people of VA through her efforts to develop a memorial in honor of the loved ones who were lost to the sea off Virginia. There are so many stories to be told, so many hearts to heal, and so many tears to shed that they surely would fill an ocean or a sea. So it is with a great sense of humbleness that this project has been approached and the sincere hope that everyone’s efforts will reflect with dignity, the lives of those that were lost and through love the mending of the lives of those who were left behind.
Northampton County Administration kindly donated the land, located in Oyster, Virginia overlooking the water, to the organization. Many thanks go out to them for their generous donation.
